The Voladero International Film and Video Festival became the Monterrey International Film Festival.
The Festival took place from August 13th to the 20th at the Cineteca Nuevo León and for the first time in MMCinemas theatres. The Festival openes the competition to feature films and chose 7 films for its first selection. The winner was De Nadie (México, 2005) directed by Tin Dirdamal. The oficial selection of shorts films was made up of 46 films from 15 countries.
The Basque Cinematheque and the KIMUAK program were the especial guests at the Festival, offering a screening of 7 years of work in the Basque Country.
The recently restored version of Los olvidados (México, 1950) by Luis Buñuel was screened at the opening ceremony which took place at the Monterrey Contemporary Art Museum (MARCO).
The participation of children’s films in the festival was presented by the section Cine Deadeveras where a jury of children gave awards to the best short films also made by children. The winners were Guillermo Wiefling and Sofía Mejía from Argentina.
The Festival was honored with the presence of Irma Lozano a Nuevo León born actress who was selected for the festival´s first tribute for her four decades of artistic achiviement on film and television. The Calderón Theater a venue of the Festival this year, offered a special presentation of Digna: hasta el último aliento (México, 2004), with the attendance of the director Felipe Cazals and star Vanesa Bauche.
Actress Diana Bracho, then president of the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, Rosaura Espinoza, Silvia Pasquel and Luis Felipe Tovar also honored the Festival with their attendance. The Mexican Film Institute was represented by Carlos Taibo, Ivonne García and Dora Moreno.
The jury was conformed by José Luis García Agraz, Director of Estudios Churubusco, renowned Mexican Producer Roberto Fiesto, Berlinale Teddy Award (twice) winning director Julián Hernández, and Víctor Saca, Nuevo León born director and winner of the Ariel, the Mexican Academy Award.
